WITH MY HANDS
How do your hands change the world?
I plan to shoot and collect photography and video of YOUR hands and use these images to create a short film series about how our hands impact the world.
DESCRIPTION:
The With My Hands project explores the power of hands through photography, video and mixed media. I intend to collect imagery, via social media, of how we contribute to the world--big or small--with our hands. I will weave these stories together with original footage captured on local and international travel shoots. My subjects include people across cultures---artists, activists, healers and every day people who are passionate about making extraordinary, hands on contributions to the world. Yves is building new schools in Haiti; Ariel, 13, is writing a book about going green; and Claudia, uses Reiki to heal terminal cancer patients.
From the mundane to the magnificent, our hands are used throughout the day to text friends, birth babies, and design technology. A citizen enters a voting booth and influences a nation with her hand; the President s/he elects holds the power to bomb a country in his. Have you stopped to look at your hands lately—or thought about what you would do without them?
In looking at hands as a metaphor for change, I also plan to explore a contrasting narrative: just as hands are used to feed, nurture and create, they also harm through violence, war and waste. We always have a choice. I would like to inspire us all to be more conscious of the choices we make before taking action.
PROJECT GOALS:
In order to get funding, we first need to make a true trailer (5-7 min) for the project that explores 3 contrasting stories about the above narrative and folds in user generated content (UGC). The $50K would go towards the following:
1. Pre-Production, Production and Post Production of trailer, including necessary equipment rental, staff pay, dubs, photo scans, etc.
2. Travel for myself (photographer/video shooter), a second video shooter (HD), and a producer
3. Branding and design of simple Website/blog
4. Outreach/marketing to collect UGC, generate excitement about project and keep Dream Assignment community up to date

I agree with John! Great job on your presentation & his advice is spot on re: contacting others. I would add, make easy instructions to send to your databases & BE SURE to tell them to leave a comment as you have no other way to know they voted and also lends to the scoring.

Good ideas like yours that are not in the Top 100 are nearly impossible to find. This is unfair as many great ideas are hidden.
