The Ties that Bind
There is nothing that ties us together like the common bond of family. Weather the lines connection is by a common ancestry, affinity or co-residence the connections we have to others gives us the foundation to live our life with meaning.
My dream assignment would be to capture the invisible lines that we all have. To photograph the ideals that make up a family.
The idea came to me after living in California, far away from my biological family on the East Coast. Over time the friendships I made were as close as any family I had ever known. We shared holidays and birthdays, Joys and sadness. We shared love and life. The concept of what a family was to me had started to take on a new form. This can be seen in every area of the world.
The street children of Brazil have developed a hierarchy, that for them, is the definition of family. Not unlike the structures of a biological family anywhere in the world. From a single mother in the Western hemisphere, to a tribe in South Africa, I plan to document the relationships between people. The invisible lines of love and loyalty that prove regardless of our race, creed, income or placement ~ that we have a common bond.
Finally, to create a book so that everyone can see the diversity in the meaning of family. That no family is the same, yet every family creates a foundation to who we become as people. I hope to show though my photographs, the similarities that show each of us, that we are never truly alone and we are all connected as a family of the world.

With the internet, this has become even more true. My son called this morning distraught that a friend of his - whom he only knew over the net - was murdered in the Netherlands. Your dream will show such connections. Good luck - here is another vote - don't forget to vote for yourself.

The family around the world is what keeps people strong. Without family we have nothing. Finding the well hidden ties that bind families together can be captured photographically with the right person behind the lens. This you can do.
Sounds like an interesting idea and your thought about the street children makes sense. You got my vote.

Blended families would fall into this as well. The idea of family is not just a biological mom & dad as I have learned without realizing I learned it.

most of the projects here are documentary assignments, and most of the judges are documentary photographs. I believe in my project, but I don't think I have a chance, coz my project is more conceptual. Anyways.. good luck with yours!
Kelly, if they don't pic you, we'll find a way to make it happen for you. But either way , they'd be crazy not to. Keep the camera up kid!
I like your idea, check out mine and vote for me if you like it. Its about poverty and society in 3rd world countries and how they are controlled, devastated by their governments and western industrialized nations.
