A Street Called Hope: Homeless Kids in 3 Countries Finding a Future

100 million homeless kids live under bridges, in shelters, and abandoned buildings throughout the world. But there is hope! I'll show the lives of homeless kids in India, Russia, and the U.S, & the people and programs lifting them up.

Youth homelessness is a global issue.

In India, like in many countries, it is estimated that "thousands" of homeless children beg in the streets.

In St. Petersburg, Russia, statistics from 2004 estimate that over 20,000 children and youth spend their days and nights without a home. They struggle with sexual exploitation and the lure of drugs used to cope.

Likewise, in the U.S. where I have worked as a social worker and journalist, homeless teens and children struggle. They change schools repeatedly, moving from one shelter to another. They go without food, naps, and stability. They see a future lacking in hope.

But despite the grim circumstances, many of these kids will still smile at you. And though many programs organized to help them are under-funded, there are volunteers reaching out to lift them up.

If given the opportunity, I will travel to Russia, India and here in the U.S. to spend time with these kids and teens. I will share their stories with you in photos and words -- stories of struggle, courage and hope.

Thanks everyone! I think it's such an important issue! And I agree with kjshank - with the current economic issues around the world child/teen homelessness will likely be increasing.

Guys, here's a link to an article on Yahoo today.

It states that "1 of every 50 U.S. kids are homeless each year." Studies vary. But check it out. - Janelle Bitikofer

Unite against the “network” that is scheming votes. Support ideas that are “lost” due to unworthy ideas using low tactics. “Insulin” is not the best idea. Something is wrong here and many fantastic ideas are getting lost due to the “network.” If you like my idea on “Vanishing Cultures,” vote for it.

johnfellman

Very cool. Please, check me out too when you've got the time.
