Making Peace with the World/ Peace Corps at 50
Photograph Peace Corps volunteers in service around the world. Create a visual record of Peace Corps volunteers in the field to help promote the agency in time for the 50th anniversary in 2011.
The 50th anniversary of Peace Corps is in 2011. As a returned Peace Corps volunteer and a photojournalist, I propose to travel document the work of Peace Corps volunteers in every country currently served to create a visual record that will show how the agency still is active in pursuing the original three goals; providing skilled people to developing countries that request volunteers, those volunteers learning about the host country and sharing their culture and bringing back home what they learned.

Lovely idea. I voted for you. Perhaps you can read my proposal and return the favor.
this is rad! i pic's it. Mine is all about exposing a fatal war in the Congo and encouraging activism. Return the vote?
sounds really interesting, you got my vote...
check mine out... PIC if you agree!! :)
Truly amazing! Wonderful dream & Best of luck! You have my "PIC" - please take a second to read about my cause - furthering peaceful coexistence between Arabs and Israelis in the Middle East and around the world! Thank you!
Great project to support and publicize what Peace Corps is currently doing in the world.
What an awesome birthday present. Good luck! check mine out if you get the chance.
won't be only about peace I suppose...
good luck, nice project, voted!
please check my project too!
The project will give a picture of the developing world in a pivotal time in history as globalization, environmental issues and other factors causes changes worldwide.
By photographing American Peace Corps volunteers as they work with their host country counterparts this project will show how Peace Corps fosters cross cultural interaction.
It will also tell stories of people in countries in the developing world that often get overlooked by mainstream media (unless there is a natural disaster or war).
There are many photojournalists who make their careers from covering conflict, and they are to be commended for their work, but I want to be a "peace photographer." In other words I want to follow in the footsteps of Cornell Capa, rather than his brother, Robert Capa.
Any thoughts of doing some photos of RPCV's back in the states? A kind of "where are they now?"
My vote is in!
Best of luck Richard! I'll send the link to this site to the people on my blog who showed interest when I first highlighted your campaign there.(I'm the girl who called you a dork over at The Point. :)
Just to clarify: What I propose is an in-depth photographic documentary of Peace Corps volunteers in the field. I will photograph Peace Corps volunteers working on their projects, living in their communities, and living their day-to-day lives while meeting the daily challenges of Peace Corps life.
To mousepotato66, Yep I am still a dork! Thanks for the continued support.
Good luck on getting the votes!
Good ideas like yours that are not in the Top 100 are nearly impossible to find. This is unfair as many great ideas are hidden. Those of us in the “Sub-100” should work together to promote the best projects of the Sub-100 so that they can be in the Top 100 and be seen. Please vote for best Sub-100s!
I love what you are doing, good luck! Keep up the good work.
Good Luck and keep going
I'm visualizing your success!
From an LS member.
Good Luck!
Vote submitted! Good luck, Mr. Sitler!
PCVs are the face of America that people in the developing world know best...true ambassadors. You have my vote because Peace Corps is so important in addressing the poverty and inequality that stain our world. Bravo!
Thank you to everyone for their votes and comments. The comment by elmodog is exactly the reason I want to do this project. I wish I would have written that in my proposal!
good luck bud!
You got my vote, Rich!!
Rich, Hope that your dream comes true. Be sure
to include the volunteers in the Philippines,
which was my assignment from 1963-65. I spent
6 months traveling through Asia and Europe on
my way home.
this sounds awesome - i'm a rpcv - dominican republic 92-95. it was a tremendous experience. your idea sounds great. hope you get it.
best - nancy

Copi
Thanks Copi. How's everything?
If you win, you should come and visit me. Hopefully I will be serving by then. My nomination is for the North Africa/Middle East region.
I think this is a great idea and the use of technology to get people to look at this is interesting to me.
Got my vote, Rich. I know your experience is leading you to the heart of the matter. These days, especially, it's vital that the Peace Corp ideal at work be revealed! Take care. Joe H.
I was going to vote for Nader, but he didn't have an entry. Best of luck. It's a good and timely idea.
Sounds like great idea to pass along something good these days! Good luck Rich!
I served in the Congo(Zaire) so the Congo one was hard to pass up but I voted for traveling around to depict PCVs at work because PC needs the exposure right now.
best of Luck Richard from a RPCV and friend of your sister
Good luck,
You might rethink the focus... It would be a stronger assignment if you focused on the people being helped, with the helpers as a secondary focus. Think about the memorable FSA images.
Sesweitzer: Thanks for the support and good comment. The FSA images during the Depression are very influential to me. Yes, I intend to focus on not just the volunteers, but the volunteers, their counterparts and people they serve. See my images on Peace Corps Connect.
Good luck.

Thanks for your integrity and vision. It is inspiring. You deserve support to realize this.
Be sure to get in the PCV's working "in the Boonies", & not just the city groups! J. Seamus ("Jim") Boylson, Ethiopia I

This story needs to be told, and you, R. S. , are the perfect one to do it. Thanks in advance, your work is AWSOME!!!
--Errol B in Virginia
as a former peace corps volunteer (brazil 1964-66) i might suggest you add to your assignment, the photographing of RPCVs back in the US still working in roles and jobs that continue their "mission" of bringing their experience back to their homes and families.
Good Luck, Harvey
Richard is a skilled photographer- a friend of mine viewed his photos and had this to say, "His stuff has a very real, emotional feel to it." I know that this is going to be an excellent project AND an important project to help promote The Peace Corps work around the World.
I know Rich will make this project happen whether he wins or not - he has already photographed in several Peace Corps countries to start. It'd be nice if he'd get top 20 -- at least double the votes are needed(if you voted for this project, please ask at least one friend to vote for it also).
A fundraiser for this project is featured on http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/making-peace-with-the-world. If you voted for this project, you can further help by pledging on The Point. Rich is working on earning $10,000 for this project and he has $6775 to go.
Thanks to everyone for the great comments. Justjack, I've had others suggest photographing returned volunteers. Great idea, and one I would like to do as well, after I get the funding and complete this project photographing current volunteers.
Good Luck, and hang in there...
Good luck!
Daphne - my Blackburn College friend! Thanks!
Awesome- best of luck.

Rich is a very capable photojournalist. He has also served in the Peace Corps and this is his passion. The only thing you can do with people like this is to let them fly! With his images, he will take us there!

I like your idea, check out mine and vote for me if you like it. Its about poverty and society in 3rd world countries and how they are controlled, devastated by their governments and western industrialized nations.
Good Luck Rich! Cindy Chan
