Baltics in Transition

A photographic look at the changing face of the Baltic countries: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia

The Baltic countries, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were formerly part of the Soviet Union but won their independence some 20 years ago. Each country has a unique language, culture and history yet they share many common threads, least of which is not their ties culturally and politically to Russia. Since independence, each country has had varying degrees of success in terms of modernization and rebuilding of its national identity and economic status but many problems remain, particularly now with the financial crisis which is greatly affecting the Baltic countries. This assignment visits each of the 3 nations and examines life as it is today through the camera lens within the context of Baltic identity. Particular attention will be paid to national identity, cultural tradition, economic progress, economic problems, the older generation, the younger generation, the Russian situation, and what the future holds. This is a people-based project and I plan to concentrate on people to illustrate the trends and movements that are happening now in the Baltics.

How long would you plan on working over there? Sounds like a huge project and I hope you get to be there and shoot it. Best of luck. Like me it's a bit hard to get votes when you enter at the tailend. I'm giving you a vote though and hope I'll hear back from you too! Sherrlyn Borkgren

I like your dream. I've pic'd it. Please consider my project as well.

Simpllylove,

I don't think this project would take more than a few weeks in each country to finish. I've been to the Baltics before and it shouldn't be terribly time consuming...

Your Iran dream was great and I voted for it; I am voting for this one too.

People kind of forget about the Baltic countries, don't they? I took Estonian for a year, loved my teacher! I voted. Good luck to you! If you have a moment, take a look at my project and let me know what you think! I am committed to exposing the inequalities in the public school system.

I love this part of the world. I voted!

Beware of "votes for votes". It's a scam that gets you nowhere.

adamjames

voted for this one too. good luck.

Good idea. Might generate more votes if there was a bit more detail in the proposal. Voted for it, though. Feel free to return the favor and vote for my project on Zimbabwe.

This was also a policy debate topic from when I was in high school "foreign relations with Russia" and I focused in on the Baltic states. How fantastic!

Interesting idea, check out mine and vote for me if you like it. Its about poverty and society in 3rd world countries and how they are controlled, devastated by their governments and western industrialized nations.
