Conflict in the Congo-Disease as a Weapon-5.4 Million dead and rising

Congo's death rates are far higher than elsewhere in Africa according to IRC. The biggest killers today are preventable illnesses like malaria, and diarrhea. Most of these illnesses could be easily treated if it wasn't for inaccessibility

Congo's death rates are far higher than elsewhere in Africa according to IRC. The biggest killers today are preventable illnesses like malaria, and diarrhea. Most of these illnesses could be easily treated if it wasn't for inaccessibility.

I hope to document the people directly affected by the conflict. This is a war in which disease is one of the major weapons. People are prevented to access basic healthcare and sanitation as they remain displaced and often fleeing villages and refugee camps due to the conflict.

The photo essay and multimedia package that I would shoot would follow the people directly affected by the conflict documenting their daily lives using still photography, audio, and video. The end result would be a package of powerful still photos, and interviews of people telling their stories as they live them, from their point of view.

It is so sad to hear that such basic, curable diseases are killing so many people in this day and age. Hopefully this project would bring international attention to the cause. You have my vote. Good luck!!

Good ideas like yours that are not in the Top 100 are nearly impossible to find. This is unfair as many great ideas are hidden. Those of us in the “Sub-100” should work together to promote the best projects of the Sub-100 so that they can be in the Top 100 and be seen. Please vote for best Sub-100s!

Cool idea. I take it you have seen Marcus Bleasedale's work on this topic. I'm voting for you. Feel free to return the favor and vote for my project to document political upheaval, land seizures and rights abuses in Zimbabwe.
