ARTISTS TO THE RESCUE
Creative Solutions for Forgotten, Four-Legged Friends
In this country FIVE MILLION animals are killed in shelters every year. This does not include the ones that are abused, abandoned or born homeless. It does not include those left behind when a house goes into foreclosure or an elderly person who has been care-taking a colony of homeless cats suddenly has to go into assisted living.
In my home town of Atlanta, Georgia, we have one of the worst records in the nation, killing 219 animals per day. In Georgia we still have shelters that gas animals, an excruciating and horrific death.
As an artist I work tirelessly to help as many of our forgotten friends as possible. It is work both rewarding and heartbreaking. Many artists are unsung heroes, giving of their time and livelihood to help. Artists are asked to donate work to raise funds for all kinds of charitable causes. Who has not been to an art auction? We are asked to donate many times every year, which we do without compensation because we care. Frequently artists are promised "exposure" or a "tax write-off." We understand that the first rarely happens and the" write-off" is for materials only and never for the sale price of an art piece. For instance, if a painting sells for $5000 and the canvas costs $50, the artist may write-off the price of the canvas.
My Dream Assignment is to tell the story of at least ten of these Artist-Rescuers in different parts of this country and Europe. These are artists that perform incredible acts of kindness, giving many hours of their time and resources to support countless animals. I will document their service, feature the animals they are helping and showcase their art. The featured art will be for sale.
This project will be the foundation for an ongoing organization called ARTISTS TO THE RESCUE, where art and animal lovers come together to create a new future, both for the artists and the forgotten friends they support.
Every time a work is purchased from ARTISTS TO THE RESCUE a percentage will go to fund a rescue organization, thereby creating an ongoing stream of revenue devoted to saving lives. Not only will funds be available to rescue organizations, but a fund will be created to help those working on the front lines of their communities, but who are not affiliated with a 501C3.
I want this project to be much larger than anything I could create on my own, so that ARTISTS TO THE RESCUE continues to fulfill its mission for many decades to come.
