Ethnomusicology
I want to trace the roots of modern music from the yoruba in Nigeria through Cuba, Brazil and into the United States, also documenting musicians in other african countries to explore how they have been influenced by American music.
My ideal project would be to start in Nigeria documenting aspects of the Yoruba culture, I would like it to be a multimedia project using sound and still photos. I would trace how the rhythms used in rituals carried over into modern music in Brazil, Cuba and the United States. I would interview several musicians and DJ's to include but not limited to Donald Byrd, Osunlade, and Madlib. I want to profile musicians that we are not forced to hear 30,000 times a day by Marketing Grads who have no idea about what we like. I want to bring exposure to deserving artists in Africa and Brazil as well.
